Solution

Metals: Metals are substances, which have the tendency to lose electrons. For example, sodium, potassium, and calcium.

Explanation

  1. Calcium is an element which has an atomic number of 20.
  2. The electronic configuration of calcium (Ca) is 2, 8, 8, 2.
  3. It has 2 electrons in its outermost shell, therefore calcium loses two electrons, to achieve noble gas configuration.
  4. Since it has the tendency to lose electrons, therefore it is a metal.
  5. The other reason by which we can prove this by the electronic configuration.
  6. From the electronic configuration, it is clear that calcium has 2 valence electrons.
  7. As we know valence electrons are equal to the group number. Therefore calcium belongs to group 2.
  8. As group 2 elements are alkali earth metals.

Therefore, calcium is a metal.
