Solution

Sulphuric acid can not be used instead of CaO. it is because sulphuric acid reacts with ammonia and the salt ammonium sulphate is formed.
NH3 + H2SO4 (NH3)2SO4 + H2O

Sulphuric acid is a strong oxidizing agent as well, apart from being a dehydrating agent. Where as CaO is not as such. It dehyrates without giving any artifects

CaO+H2O Ca(OH)2
