Question

Calculate approximately the heat passing per hour through the walls and windows of room 5 by 5 meters if the walls are of bricks of thickness 30 cms and have windows of glass 3mm thick and total area 5 square meters. The temperature of the room is 30 below that of the outside and the thermal conductivity of bricks and of glass is \(12 \times 10^{-4}\) and \(25 \times 10^{-4}\) C.G.S. units respectively.

Solution

The correct option is A calories
Let Q1 be the heat passing through the walls, then
Q=KA(T1T2)tx
Here area of four walls including windows
=500×500×4=10,00,000
area of all windows
=5 sq. meter50,000 sq. cm
net area of brick walls
=10,00,00050,000=9,50,000 sq cm
K for bricks=12×104 C.G.S. units
x=40cm,(T1T2)=30C and
t = 1 hr = 3600 sec.
Q1=(12×104)(9,50,000)(30)(3600)30
= 4104000 cal
Heat passing through glass windows
Q2=(25×104)(50,000)(30)(3600)0.3
= 45000000 cal.
Total heat passing
Q=Q1+Q2
= 4104000 + 45000000
=49104×103 calories
