Question

Calculate enthalpy change (in kcal) in adibatic compression of 5 moles ideal triatomic non-linear gas against a constant external pressure of 2 atm starting from initial pressure of 1 atm and initial temperature of 300 K:
(Given R= 2 cal/mol.K and vibrational degrees of freedom are inactive)

Solution

Since we are taking an adibatic process, so from the first law of thermodynamics,
ΔU=W
nCv(T2T1)=Pext(V2V1)
Since it is a triatomic non linear system, hence
nCv(T2T1)=Pext(V2V1) n3R(T2300)=2(nRT22nR3001)
3T2900=T2+600
T2=375 K
We know, ΔH=nCpΔT=5×4×2(375300)=3000 cal=3 kcal
