Question

Calculate Λ0m for CaCl2 and MgSO4 from the data
λ0Ca2+ = 119.0 S cm2mol1
λ0Cl = 76.3 S cm2mol1
λ0Mg2+ = 106.0 S cm2mol1
λ0SO24 = 160.0 S cm2mol1

Solution

Kohlraush law states that molar conductivity of an electrolyte at infinite dilution is the sum of the molar conductivities of it's ions at infinite dilution.
Thus, λ0=λ0+ + λ0
For CaCl2,
λ0=λ0Ca+2 + 2λ0Cl
=271.6Scm2mol1
For MgSO4
λ0=λ0Mg+2 + λ0SO24
=266Scm2mol1
The correct answer is 266Scm2mol1
