Question

Calculate [OH] which would be produced by each equilibrium concentration of NH3 in part (a). Predict whether Zn(OH)2 or Zn(OH)24 would form in prefemce to Zn(NH3)2+4 upon addition of sufficient NH3 to produce the equilibrium concentration calculated in part (a).

Solution

The correct option is D 9.0×104M
The concentration of OH in equilibrium with the NH3 concentration of part (a) is given by:

NH3+H2ONH4+OH,

(Let x=[NH4]=[OH])

Kb=[NH4][OH][NH3]

1.8×105=x24.5×102

x2=8.1×107x=[OH]=9.0×104M

[OH](9.0×104M) from the 4.5×102MNH3 is sufficient to precipitate Zn(OH)2 [part (b)] but not sufficient to form Zn(OH24) [part (c)]
