Let's consider the shaded portion as ABCD

Here, each small square has an area of 1 mm2.
Side length of each small square =1 mm.
Now, For the shaded region:
Length of one side AB=6 mm
Similarly the length of the other side BC=6 mm

And hence, its area =AB2=62=36 mm2.
