Question

Calculate the cardiac output (ml)of an athlete if the volume of blood pumped by each ventricle per beat is 70 ml and the heart rate is 80 beats per minute.

Open in App
Solution

Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart in one minute. It is the product of stroke volume and heart rate.

Stroke volume is the volume of blood that is ejected from each ventricle due to the contraction of the ventricles. The stroke volume is nearly 70 ml /heartbeat. Heart rate is the number of times the heart beats in one minute. For an adult human, the heartbeat is 72 times per minute.

Given data:
Stroke volume = 70ml
Heart rate = 80 beats/ minute
So, Cardiac output = Stroke volume × Heart rate
= (70 × 80)ml
= 5600ml
