Let A be the point midway between the two charges.
Electric field intensity at A due to the two charges:
$E = \frac{k q_{1}}{x^{2}} + \frac{k q_{2}}{x^{2}}$
If the two charges are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, then E reduces to zero.
