Question

Calculate the enthalpy change for the conversion of ethene C2H4 to ethane C2H6 (only magnitude in nearest integer in kj/mol).

Open in App
Solution

Given reaction
R:C2H4+H2C2H6;ΔH=?

From the given table, enthalpies of the following reactions are
R1:C+O2CO2;ΔH1=394kJ/mol

R2:H2+12O2H2O;ΔH2=286kJ/mol

R5:C2H6+72O22CO2+3H2O;ΔH3=1561kJ/mol

R6:C2H4+3O22CO2+2H2O;ΔH3=1393kJ/mol

And

R=R5+R6+R2

ΔH=ΔH5+ΔH6+ΔH2=15611393286=118kJ/mol

Answer = 118
