Question

Calculate the force by which Earth is attracted by the Sun. Also, find the acceleration and speed of the Earth around the sun. Assume orbit to be circular. Data given, Mass of the Earth:6 x 1024 kg Mass of the Sun:2 x 1030 kg Average distance between Earth and Sun: 150 million km

Solution

According to the question,
M= Mass of the Sun =2×1030kg
m= Mass of the earth =6×1024kg
R= Average distance between the earth and the Sun =1.5×1011m
From the universal law of gravitation,
F=GM×mR2
Therefore, putting all the values given in question in above equation we get
F=6.67×1011(2×1030)×(6×1024)(1.5×1011)2=35.57×1021=3.56×1022N
