Question

Calculate the mass of ascorbic acid (VitaminC,C6H8O6) to be disssolved in 75 g of acetic acid to lower its melting point by 1.5.Kf=3.9K1.

Solution

We have,

Mass of acetic acid,W1=75g

Molar mass of the ascorbic acid

(C6H8O6),

M2=6×12+1×8+6×16

=176g/mol

So, lowering of melting point, Δtf=1.5k

By using formula:

M2=1000kfW2W1Δtf

W2=M2×W1×Δtf1000×kf

=(176g/mol)(75g)(1.5k)(1000gkg1)(3.9kkgmol1)

W2=5.08g

Thus the required mass in ascorbic acid is 5.08g
