Question

Calculate the mass of C14 (half life =5720 years) atoms which give 3.7×107 disintegrations per second.

Open in App
Solution

Let the mass of 14C atoms be mg.
Number of atoms in mg of 14C=m14×6.02×1023
λ=0.693half life=0.6935720×365×24×60×60=3.84×1012sec1
We know that, dNdt=λN
i.e., Rate of disintegration =λ× number of atoms
3.7×107=0.6935720×365×24×60×60×m14×6.02×1023
3.7×107=3.84×1012×m×6.02×102314
m=2.24×104g
