Question

Calculate the mean deviation about the median for the following data:

Height (in cm)95105105115115125125135135145145155Number of boys91325301310

Solution

First we find the median.

ClassFrequency fiCumulative frequency (cf)Midpoint xi9510599100105115132211011512525471201251353077130135145139014014515510100150 N=fi=100

Thus N = 100 and therefore, N2=50

median class is 125 - 135

L = 125, f = 30, h = 10 and c = 47.

median=L+(N2c)f×h

={125+(5047)30×10}=(125+1)=126

M=126

Now, we prepare the table given below.

fixi|xiM|fi×|xiM|910026234131101620825120615030130412013140141821015024140N=100 1134

MD(M)=fi×|xiM|N=1134100=11.34

Hence, the mean deviation about the median is 11.34
