Question

Calculate the molarity of a solution containing 5g of NaOH in 450mL solution.

Open in App
Solution

Moles of NaOH
Given:
Mass of NaOH=5 g
And volume of solution =450 mL or 450×103L
Molar mass of NaOH=23+16+1=40 g mol1
Moles of NaOH=mass of NaOHmolar mass of NaOH

Moles of NaOH=5g40 g mol1=0.125 mol

Molarity of solution
We know,
Molarity =Mole of soluteVolume of solution (L)

So,
Molarity =0.125 mol450×108L
=0.278 mol L1 or 0.278M
