Question

Calculate the mole fraction of benzene in solution containing 30% by mass in carbon tetrachloride.

Open in App
Solution

Moles of components

Molar mass of benzene (C6H6)=(12×6)+(1×6)=78gmol1

Molar mass of CCl4=12+(35.5×4)=154gmol1
Therefore,
Number of moles of C6H6=Mass of benzeneMolar mass of benzene=3078=0.38mol

and,
Number of moles of CCl4=Mass of CCl_4Molar mass of CCl_4=70154=0.45mol

Mole fraction of Benzene

So, mole fraction of benzene in the given solution
=Moles of benzeneTotal moles=0.380.38+0.45=0.380.83=0.457

Thus, mole fraction of benzene in the given solution =0.457
