Calculate the molecular mass of:

Sodium sulphate decahydrateNa2SO4.10H2O.

Open in App
Solution

Molecular mass:

  • Molecular mass of a substance is the number of times a molecule of the substance is heavier than 112th of mass of a carbon (C-12) atom.
  • Molecular mass of a substance can be obtained by adding the atomic masses of all the atoms present in a molecule of the substance.

The molecular mass of Sodium sulfate decahydrate Na2SO4.10H2O:

=2×(Atomicmassofsodium)+atomicmassofsulphur+4×(atomicmassofoxygen)+20×(atomocmassofhydrogen)+10×(atomicmassofoxygen)=2×23+32+4×16+20×1+10×16=46+32+64+20+160=322a.m.u.Therefore, the molecular mass of Sodium sulfate decahydrate is 322a.m.u.
