Question

Calculate the molecular mass of Sulphuric acid H2SO4.

Given Atomic masses: H = 1u, S = 32u, 0 = 16u

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculating the molecular mass

Molecular mass is equal to the sum of atomic masses of all the atoms present in one molecule of a substance.

Step 2: Given data

Atomic masses: H = 1u, S = 32u, 0 = 16u

Step 3: Finding the molecular mass for the given data

The molecular mass of H2SO4 = (Number of hydrogen atoms x atomic mass of hydrogen) + (Number of sulphur atoms x atomic mass of sulphur) + (Number of oxygen atoms x atomic mass of oxygen)

The molecular mass of H2SO4 = 2×1+1×32+4×16

The molecular mass of H2SO4 = 2+32+64=98 g/mol

Hence, the molecular mass of Sulphuric acid H2SO4 is 98 g/mol
