(a) Ethyne (C2H2)

(b) Hydrogen chloride (HCl)

(c) Nitric acid (HNO3)

[3 Marks]

Solution

(a) Ethyne (C2H2)
The molecular mass of ethyne, C2H2=
(2 × atomic mass of C) + (2 × atomic mass of H) = (2 × 12 u) + (2 × 1 u) = 26 u

[1 Mark]

(b) Hydrogen chloride (HCl)
The molecular mass of hydrogen chloride, HCl =
(1 × atomic mass of H) + (1 × atomic mass of Cl) = (1 × 1 u) + (1 × 35.5 u) = 36.5 u

[1 Mark]
(c) Nitric acid (HNO3)
The molecular mass of nitric acid, (HNO3) =
(1 × atomic mass of H) + (1 × atomic mass of N) + (3 × atomic mass of O) = (1 × 1 u) + (1 × 14 u) + (3 × 16 u) = 63 u
