Question

Calculate the molecular weight of Ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4]?

Open in App
Solution

  • We can calculate the molecular weight of a compound by adding the individual atomic weight of the components in the compound.
  • In Ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4] the individual components are Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Sulphur and Oxygen.
  • Atomic mass of Nitrogen(N) =14, Since there are 2 Nitrogen atoms, 2×14=28g

Atomic mass of Hydrogen(H)=1, Since there are 8 Hydrogen atoms, 1× 8 = 8g

Atomic mass of Sulphur(S) = 32g

Atomic mass of Oxygen(O) = 16, Since there are 4 Oxygen atoms, 16×4 = 64g

  • We can calculate the molecular weight of Ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4] by adding the above values.

i.e., The molecular weight of Ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4] = 28 + 8 + 32 + 64 = 132g/mol.

So the molecular weight of Ammonium sulphate [(NH4)2SO4] is 132g/mol.
