Question

Calculate the moment of inertia of a thin ring of mass m and radius r.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

A thin ring of mass and radius is,

Mass = m

Radius = r

Step 2: Calculation of moment of inertia

Moment of inertia(I) =MR2

Step 3: Find the moment of inertia

By using the perpendicular axis theorem,

Ix+Iy=Iz

Since both IX and IY are along the diameter,

IX=Iy

2Ix=Iz=MR2

Idiameter=MR22

Therefore, the moment of inertia is MR22.
