Chromosomes are in dyad before meiosis began and that form consists of 2 identical chromatids attached together at the centromere whereas a bivalent is an association of a pair of homologous chromosomes physically held together by at least one DNA crossover. If a cell has 20 bivalent made of a pair of a homologous pair must have 40 chromatids.
