Question

Calculate the % of:

oxygen in calcium hydroxide

Open in App
Solution

Formula to calculate the % of an element in a compound:

%compositionofanelement=Numberofatomsoftheelement×AtomicweightoftheelementMolecularweightofthecompound×100

Step-1: Calculate the molecular weight of Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]

Atomic weight of Calcium (Ca)= 40 u

Atomic weight of Hydrogen (H)= 1 u

Atomic weight of Oxygen (O)= 16 u

Molecular weight of Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] =Atomic weight of Calcium (Ca)+ 2[Atomic weight of Hydrogen (H)]+ 2[Atomic weight of Oxygen (O)]

Molecular weight of Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] =40+ 2(1) +2(16)

Molecular weight of Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] =74 u

Step-2: Calculate the % of Oxygen in Calcium hydroxide

Number of atoms of Oxygen in Calcium hydroxide= 2

Amount of Oxygen in Calcium hydroxide= 32 u

Molecular weight of Calcium hydroxide= 74 u

Substituting the values in the given formula above

%compositionofOxygen=2×1674×100=43.24%

Therefore, the % of oxygen in Calcium hydroxide is 43.24 %
