Question

Calculate the percentage of nitrogen and oxygen in ammonium nitrate.[Relative molecular mass of molecular nitrate is 80 ,H= 1,N =14, O= 16].

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Write the given terms:

The molecular mass of NH4 (NO3) = 80g

H= 1, N =14, O= 16

Step 2: Find the percentage of oxygen:

Percentage of Oxygen:

As 80g of NH4(NO3) contains 48g of oxygen

Therefore, 100 g of NH4(NO3) contains = 48x10080=60%

Step 3: Find the percentage of nitrogen:

Percentage of Nitrogen:

As 80g of NH4(NO3) contains 28g of nitrogen

100 g of NH4(NO3) contains =28x10080=35%

Step 4: Result:

Hence, the percentage of nitrogen and oxygen in ammonium nitrate is 35% and 60 % respectively.
