Question

Calculate the power of a motor which is capable of raising 1000 kg of water in 5 minutes from a well 60 m deep. g=9.8 m/s2.

Open in App
Solution

Given that,

Mass of the water to be raisedm=1000kg

Height through which it will be raisedh=60m

Acceleration due to gravityg=9.8m/s2

Time taken t=5min=300s

Work done in lifting the water

W=mgh

W=1000×9.8×60

W=588000J

Power is defined as the rate of doing work

P=Wt

P=588000300

P=1960Watts

P=2.63 hp

Hence, the power of a motor is 2.63 hp
