Question

Calculate the pressure exerted by a brick which applies a force of 2.5 Newton when it is placed on its widest base (dimensions 25 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm).

Open in App
Solution

Step 1, Given

Force = 2.5 N

Dimension of the brick = 25 cm × 10 cm× 5 cm

Step 2, Finding the pressure

We know,

Pressure = Force/Area
When it is placed on the widest base i.e. 25 cm then its length and breadth are 25 cm and 10 cm respectively.
so area = 25×10=250 cm2=0.025m2
Therefore, Pressure = 2.5/0.025=100 Nm-2 .

Hence the pressure exerted by the brick is 100 N/m2
