Question

Calculate the quantity of heat produced in a 20Ω resistor carrying 2.5Acurrent in 5 minutes.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 Given data:
Current(i)=2.5AResistance(R)=20Ωtime(t)=5minutes=5×60sec=300seconds

Step 2 Formula used:
Quantity of heat produced is given
Heatproduced=Potentialdifference×current×time
Numerically H=V×i×t
H=i2×R×t(fromOhm'slaw,V=i×R)
Where V-potential difference, R-resistance, i-current, H-heat produced, t-time

Step 3 Finding the quantity of heat produced:
Quantity of heat produced H=i2×R×t
H=2.52A×20Ω×300sec
H=37500J
Since 1kJ=1000J
therefore, H=37.5kJ
Hence, 37.5kJ heat is produced.
