Question

Calculate the ratio between the wavelength of an electron and a proton, if the proton is moving at half the velocity of the electron (mass of the proton =1.67×1027kg; mass of the electron =9.11×1028g).

Solution

Apply de Broglie equation, λ=hmv

Wavelength of electron =6.625×10349.11×1031v

Wavelength of proton =6.625×10341.67×1027×0.5v.

Hence the ratio comes out to be 9.2455×102m.
