Question

Calculate the resonance energy of N2O from the following data:
ΔHof of N2O=134 KJmol1
Bond energy of NO,N=O,NN and O=O bonds are 222,607,946 and 498 kJmol1 respectively.

Solution

NN(g)+12(O=O)N=N=O(g)
ΔHf(N2O)=[ΔH(NN)+12ΔH(O=O)][ΔH(N=O)+ΔH(N=N)]
=(946+12×498)(607+418)
=11951025=170kJmol1
Resonance energy = Observed heat of formation Calculated heat of formation
=82170=88kJmol1
