Question

Calculate the resonance energy of N2O from the following data: fH of N2O=82 kJ mol1, standard bond enthalpies of N=N,N=N,O=O and N=O bonds are 946,418,498 and 607 kJ mol1 respectively.

Solution

NN(g)+12O=¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯O(g)N=N+=O(g)

ΔH = [Energy required] – [Energy released]

=(ΔHNN+12ΔHO=O)(ΔHN=N+ΔHN=O)

=(946+12×498)(418+607)=170kJ/mol

So, Resonance energy = Expected value – Observed value of ΔHf=17082=88kJ/mol

Ans : 88kJ/mol
