Question

Calculate the temperature of the gas if it obeys van der Waals' equation from the following data. A flask of 2.5 litre contains 10 mole of a gas under 50 atm. Given, a=5.46 atm litre2mol2 and b=0.031 litre mol1.

Solution

Given that,
P=50 atm;V=2.5 litre,n=10;a=5.46 atm litre2mol2;
b=0.031 litre mol1;R=0.0821 litreatm K1mol1.
Applying van der Waals' equation,
(P+an2V2)(Vnb)=nRT
or T=(P+an2V2)(Vnb)nR
=(50+5.46×100(2.5)2)(2.510×0.031)10×0.0821=366.4 K
