Question

Calculate the temperature of the gas (in kelvin) if it obeys van der Waals' equation from the following data. A flask of 2.5 L contains 10 mol of a gas under 50 atm. Given (a=5.46 atm L2 mol2, b=0.031 L mol1).

Solution

Given:
P=50 atm;V=2.5 L,n=10 mol; a=5.46 atm L2 mol2, b=0.031 L mol1; R=0.082 atm L mol1 K1
putting these values in van der Waals' equation,
(P+an2V2)(Vnb)=nRT
or T=(P+an2V2)(vnb)nR
=(50+5.46×100(2.5)2)(2.510×0.031)10×0.0821=366.4K
on solving we get
T=366.4K
