Question

Calculate the time for which a motor pump of 10 HP and efficiency 80% must be switched on, so as to pump 20m^3 of water through a vertical height of 20m. (Density of water=1000kgm^-3, g=10ms^-2, 1HP=750W)

Solution

Dear student

Power of motor pump= 10 HP
= 80/100* 10* 750
= 6000 Watt

We know,
Work done= p*t
mgh= 6000* t
( mass= density* volume)

20*1000*10* 20 = 6000* t
t = 20,000*20,000/ 6000
= 666.67 sec
