Question

Calculate the total energy UB and the energy density Up of the magnetic field stored in a solenoid 0.5m long, having 5000turns and a current 10A. (radius of the solenoid is 4cm).

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

Length of the solenoid(L)= 0.5m

Turns(N) = 5000

Current(I) = 10A

radius(r) = 4cm

Step 2: Formula used

B=μ0NIl

Here,

B is the magnetic field.

μ0 is the permeability of free space(4π×10-7).

N is the number of turns in the given solenoid.

I is the current through the solenoid.

E=B22μ0AL

where,

E is the electric field.

B is the magnetic field.

μ0 is the permeability of free space(4π×10-7).

ALis the area of the solenoid.

Step 3: Calculation of total energy

B=μ0NIl

B=4×π×107×5000×100.5

B=0.04π.

E=B22μ0AL

E=(0.04π)22×4π×107×π(0.04)2×0.5

E=15.7joules

Therefore, the total energy is 15.7joules.
