Question

Calculate the vapour density of SO2(O=16,S=32).

Open in App
Solution

Vapour density of a gas is the ratio of mass of a certain volume of gas or vapour to the mass of the same volume of hydrogen under the same temperature and pressure.

It is related to the molecular weight of the gas as follows :

Molecular weight of the gas = Vapour density of gas x 2

Molecular weight of SO2 gas = Vapour density of SO2 gas x 2

Molecular weight of SO2 = (MassofS+2massofO)

= {32 + (2 x 16)}

= 64 g

So, Vapour density of SO2 gas =MolecularweightofSO2gas2= 64g2 = 32 g

So, Vapour density of SO2 gas is 32 g.
