Solution

The correct option is A 31.4 torr
Given,
Temperature, T1=77C=350 K
Temperature, T2=27C=300 K
Aqueous tension is the vapour pressure of water, thus
Vapour pressure at 350 K, P1=314.1 torr
Molar heat of vaporisation of water, ΔH=40 kJ/mol

Effect of temperature on the vapour pressure of a liquid is given by Clausius – Clapeyron equation,
ln (P2P1)=ΔHR(1T11T2)
Substituting the given values, we get,
ln (P2314.1)=(400008.314)(1350 1300)

ln (P2314.1)=(4811.2)×(12100)ln (P2314.1)=2.29P2314.1=0.1P2=31.4 torr
Vapour pressure of water at 57C,P2=31.4 torr
