Question

Calculate the velocity (cm/sec) of an electron placed in the third orbit of the hydrogen atom. Also calculate the number of revolutions per second that this electron makes around the nucleus.

Open in App
Solution

Radius of 3rd orbit =32×0.529×108=4.761×108cm
We know that,
mvr=nh2π or v=nh2πmr
=3×6.624×10272×3.14×(9.108×1028)×(4.761×108)
=0.729×108cm/sec
Time taken for one revolution =2πrv
Number of revolutions per second =12πrv=v2πr
=0.729×1082×3.14×4.761×108
=2.4×1014revolutions/sec.
