Question

Calculate the volume of H2 gas at STP which would be produced per minute from radiolysis of water in a 1000 kW reactor, assumimg that 100 eV of energy produces 1 molecule of hydrogen
2H2OH2+H2O2 (1eV=1.6×1019J)
Plan energy given in kW is to be converted into Js1 and thus, volume of H2 gas produced in this reactor can be calculated.

Solution

The correct option is A 139.55 L
Given 1eV=1.6×1019J
100eV=100×1.6×1019J
=1.6×1017J
Also 1000kW=1000×1000W
=1000×1000Js1
=106Js1
=106×60 J in one minute (as required)
1.6×1017 J produces =1 molecule of H2
60×106 J produces =60×1061.6×1017 molecules
=37.5×1023 molecules
=37.5×10236.02×1023 mol h2
=6.23 mol h2
1 mol at STP has volume =22.4 L
6.23 mol at STP has volume =139.55 L
