Calculate the weight of non-volatile solute (in grams) having molecular weight 40 u, which should be dissolved in 57 g octane to reduce its vapour pressure to 80%:

Here, molecular weight of the solute is=40 u
Again, solvent is octane (C8H18)
So, molar mass of the solvent is=114 g mol1
Let, the vapour pressure of pure solvent be Po
Hence according to the relative lowering of vapour pressure,
P00.8P0P0=w40w40+57114
Where, w is the mass of solute present in the solution.
P00.8P0P0=ww+20
0.2=ww+20
0.2w+4=w
w=5 g
