Question

Calculate the work done in raising a stone of mass 4 kg and specific gravity 2 immersed in water from a depth of 3 m to 1 m below the surface.

Open in App
Solution

Density of water, d = 1000 kg/m3
Density of stone, D = 2000 kg/m3
Force, F = Weight of stone in water = mg (1 - dD) = 4 × 9.8 × (1 - 12) = 19.6 N
Work done = F × S = 19.6 × (3 - 1) = 39.2 J
