Question

Can a convex lens produce virtual image? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  1. The virtual image is formed of points from which divergent rays seem to emanate without actually doing so.
  2. A convex lens can produce either a real or virtual image based on the position of the object.

Diagram:

  1. Here the object (AB) is placed between the focal point (F) and optical center (C) of the convex lens.
  2. When light rays pass through an object (AB), it gets converged and forms a virtual image (A'B').
  3. The virtual image formed in this case is always erect and enlarged and magnification is always greater than one.
  4. This principle is used to design magnifying glasses and a simple microscope.
  5. Hence, the object is placed between the focal point and optical center of the convex lens, then the convex lens can produce the virtual image.
