Question

Can a geometric mean be negative?

Open in App
Solution

The answer is No :

Definition of Geometric Mean (GM): GM is the average value, which signifies the central tendency of the set of numbers by finding the product of their values. Basically, we multiply the numbers altogether and take the nth root of the multiplied numbers, where n is the total number of data values.

For example: for a given set of two numbers such as 3 and 1, the geometric mean is equal to (3×1)=3=1.732.

The geometric mean of numbers cannot be negative. If any of the terms in the sequence are, then we might get the imaginary numbers as the geometric mean. However, the basic fact is that the geometric mean applies to only non-negative integers, i.e. positive numbers (means natural numbers).

Hence ,the geometric mean of numbers cannot be negative.
