Question

can activation energy of a reaction be zero or negative

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

In certain cases, it is observed that rate of reaction decreases with the increase in temperature. Thus, if an approximately exponential relationship is followed, then rate constant can fit into the Arrhenius Equation, thereby making the Activating Energy turn out negative, i.e., EA = -ve.

On the other hand, Activation Energy cannot be zero because activation energy is the difference observed between the average intermediate energy and the initial (starting) energy. And we consider this activation energy to be zero that in such case, every collision among the reactants should turn out to be an effective one, but this is not possible. Therefore, no zero value is obtained.
