Algae:

  1. Algae is a group of eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms.
  2. Humans consume macroalgae for many years, these algae are mostly nori seaweed and wakame.
  3. Spirulina, a blue-green alga is now used as an extremely beneficial nutritional supplement. It is a single-cell protein (SCP).
  4. Not only algae, some types of yeast, fungi, but bacteria are also used as a food supplement and processed for commercial use. They contain a high amount of essential amino acids than conventional known protein sources.
  5. Different types of SCP are- yeasts- Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida utilis; bacteria- Methylophilus methylotrophus, Brevibacterium sp.; cyanobacteria- Spirulina sp.; algae- Chlorella sp., Scenedesmus sp. Filamentous fungi- Fusarium graminearum, Chaetomium cellulolyticum.
  6. So, algae can be eaten by humans.
