Question

Can aluminium be extracted from bauxite through hydrometallurgy?

Open in App
Solution

Yes
  • Extraction using aqueous solution is called Hydrometallurgy.
  • It is a preferential process.
  • Generally low grade or complex ores are extracted using hydrometallurgy.

Steps In Hydrometallurgy :-

  1. Preparation of ore for leaching ( size reduction, chemical treatment )
  2. Leaching ( dissolution ) which is hydro mettalurgical method
  3. Separation of leach liquor
  4. Recovery of metallic values from leach liquor (precipitation )
5.Recycling of leach liquorliquor

Extraction Process of Aluminiumfrom Bauxite Ore. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and is a constituent of many minerals. ... In this process the ground bauxite is leached with caustic soda (NaOH) to produce soluble sodium aluminate (NaAlO2), leaving the impurities in the insoluble residue
