Question

Can Aluminium Be Rusted?

Open in App
Solution

“Rust” results from the oxidization of ironFe. AluminiumAl, technically, cannot rust. But aluminiumAl forms aluminium oxideAl2O3, in a chemical process like the creation of iron oxidesFe2O3.

AluminiumAl has a reaction affinity to oxygenO. When a new aluminiumAl surface is exposed to the presence of air, it quickly develops a thin, hard film of aluminium oxideAl2O3. This aluminium oxideAl2O3 makes aluminiumAl corrosion-resistant that's why it cannot be rusted.
