Can atoms have valencies more than 4..how ..please explain with examples
Some elements can expand their octet! So they can have valence more than 4. But you will find that elements up to atomic number 10 doesn't have valence more than 4. It is because they don't have vacant orbitals. (each shell is further divided in orbitals such as s, p, d, f where they can contain almost 2, 6,10,14 electrons respectively. Also 1st shell contains s orbital (i.e. 2 electrons) only, the 2nd shell contains s and p orbitals (i.e. 2+6=8 electrons), the 3rd orbital can contain s,p,d orbitals(i.e. 18 electrons) and the remaining shell contains all 4(i.e 32 electrons)).
For now you can consider that element belonging to 3rd period like phosphorous thus have vacant d orbital in 3rd shell and that's why it can have valence more than 4 as it can accept electrons in it's vacant orbital.
