Question

Can bacteria be used to make toothpastes?

Open in App
Solution

At present there are no toothpastes that contain bacteria. But toothpaste might soon contain beneficial bacteria to fight tooth decay.
Strepptococcus mutans, or S. mutans, is a bacterium that causes tooth decay. S. mutans sticks to the surface of teeth, producing an aggressive acid that breaks down the enamel.

The bacteria found in yogurt might come to the rescue. Scientists report that a strain of lactobacillus called L. anticaries can be used to prevent above given bacteria from causing tooth decay.
