Solution

Basidiomycetes

  1. The fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota are commonly known as basidiomycetes.
  2. It is a vast phylum that contains forms commonly known as mushrooms.
  3. Basidiomycetes can be both parasites and saprophytic.
  4. Several groups are mycorrhizal.

Reproduction in Basidiomycetes

  1. Basidiomycetes are defined mainly by generating their sexual spores, termed basidiospores (generally 4 in number).
  2. Spores germinate at the end of the structure called a basidium.
  3. Basidiospores are haploid but can be either uninucleate or multinucleate upon maturity.
  4. Basidiospores are generated externally.
  5. In basidiomycetes, spores are produced by sexual reproduction rather than asexual reproduction.
  6. They reproduce vegetatively by the budding or fragmentation method.
  7. So Basidiomycetes do not reproduce asexually they reproduce sexually by spore formation or they reproduce vegetatively by fragmentation or budding.
