Question

Can : CH3 CH(C2H5) CH(C2H5) CH3

Be written as : CH3 (CH(C2H5))2 CH3

Open in App
Solution

No it cannot be written in that form.
The bracket indicates that the compound in the bracket is branched.
Moreover it should satisfy the valency of carbon.
Usually the branching will be done to the carbon preceding the bracket.
So in second case carbon will be having 5 bonds which is not possible since carbon has valency 4.
